Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg has said: "I'm proud of the fact that not one of our 63 MPs has indulged in 'flipping' second-homes to abuse the expenses system, and not one Liberal Democrat MP has tried to exploit second homes for tax advantages." He said the Liberal Democrats have stood four-square for years on the need for Parliamentary reform.
"I wrote to David Cameron and George Brown well over a year ago on the need for a root and branch reform of the expenses system, but they wouldn't reply. Of course, if we have a system where 40% of all the seats in the House of Commons are regarded as "safe seats" and never change hands, we have 40% of our MPs regarding their position as a job for life. We need voting reform and proportional representation to make votes count more, to help people feel involved and make votes count - and much more."
