FAQs

I know what Liberal Democrats do locally, but what do you stand for at national level?
The key national issues for us are freedomfairness and trust.
The most important issue facing the world is to save our environment from destruction so that all people are free to live productive lives. So we will cut pollution, cut congestion and boost renewable energy.

We can't have freedom in this country unless people are safe to live their lives. So we will put 10,000 more police officers on the street and take other steps to cut crime and fear of crime.
Conservatives and Labour have left us with a less fair Britain. So we will scrap tuition fees and top-up fees for students, replace the unfair council tax by a fairer local income tax, and ensure that pensioners and people who need care get a fair deal by introducing free personal care and giving all pensioners of 75 an extra £25 on their pension a week.

Lastly, we believe that after Labour took us to war in Iraq on the basis of weapons of mass destruction that didn't exist, it is vital that we now have a government which will be straight with the British public and a government you can trust.

I'd like to help the Liberal Democrats, but I lead a very busy life. Would it involve a big commitment of time?

No.

Many supporters help us for just an hour or so every couple of months, delivering 100 or so newsletters near their home, helping out at a sale or attending a social evening.
Others help by making a small financial contribution from time to time, to help fund our newsletters.
The Liberal Democrats are kept going by individuals like yourself, not by big business or trade unions, and we appreciate all our supporters' copntribution, big or small.

What would I get from joining the Liberal Democrats? Isn't voting for them at elections enough?

We're glad of your vote, which can help to elect Lib Dem councillors, MPs and MEPs.
Joining the party would give you a say in who should be the candidates in these elections.
You'd receive regular information about what the party is saying on the big issues of the day, and you could even seek to go along to party conferences and help decide the party's policies.
And of course your subscription would help pay for the party's campaigning.
