It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of former secretary John Hilton.

John Hilton, who died on Wednesday, 29 July after a long illness, was an active member of the Liberal Democrats in Dover and Deal.

He served as secretary on the Liberal Democrat party committee for five years until 2008 and was the auditor of the party accounts until his death.

John stood as a local councillor in numerous local elections and he and his wife frequently hosted party events at their home.

John moved with his family from Lewisham, London, to Dover in February 1998 to run the Talavera Guest House in Folkestone Road.

He joined the Social Democrat Party (SDP) when it formed in 1981. He was active in the new party and stood in local council elections before the move to Dover.

John had many interests and enjoyed books, music, singing and the theatre.

John leaves his wife Jan, to whom he was married for 44 years, their three daughters Sarah, Tina, and Gloria, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral will take place at noon, 14 August at Barham.
